Top 5 Wine Resolutions for the New Year
You'll want to keep these all year round!

Before we could say “cliché resolutions,” the new year has snuck up on us. So what if you were told that you could trade in your stale old resolutions (ahem, are they not the same ones we make every year?) and instead resolve to enjoy more of the good stuff in a glass—and more often, too!—with five simple steps.

These 5 tips are sure ways to keep the excitement going all year round!

1. Add sparkle year round. The new year conjures images of foamy flutes and clinking glasses. But why confine the bubbly to one night a year? Sparkling wine is right at home pairing with salty and savory appetizers, and is the perfect aperitif.

And sure, Champagne is a true classic when it comes to celebration, but don’t sell yourself short. There are many types of sparkling wines from around the world (and domestically) that will broaden your palate and save you some pennies at the same time. Try sampling sparkling wines such as dry, refreshing Cava from Spain, sweet-tart Prosecco from Italy, and spirited Sekt from Germany, which are each available from a variety of producers.

2. Eat your wine. What’s cookin’, good lookin’? Plenty of delicacies, if you learn the simple and worthwhile art of cooking with wine. A good rule of thumb is to cook only with wines that you would actually want to drink (after all, it doesn’t all get “cooked away,” as they say). And just as if coordinating an outfit, you will want to keep the cooking wine and table wine related—or even the same—for maximum pairing power.

3. Branch out a little! If you have found yourself ordering your “old standbys” time and again, dare yourself to try a grape varietal you’ve never heard of, or pick from a region new to you. Carmenère from Chile, or Grüner Veltliner from Austria are great starts.

4. Host a wine tasting party. Be the host(ess) with the most(ess) and host your own soiree! What a great way to get friends or family together, and discover something new about each wine (and each person) in the process. Pick a theme, ask each person to bring a certain type of wine (or provide them all yourself), match the food to the theme, and have some fun designing your wine bucket, place settings, and anything you can think of!
